The Vasquez Family Story
Albert and Blanca Vasquez have always loved good, home-style Mexican food. But because Mexican cuisine is prepared with lard, an animal product, it was hard to find restaurants where Blanca, a vegetarian, could eat. So in 1989, Albert and Blanca opened their own restaurant: El Saguarito!
They modified family recipes, replacing the traditional lard with Canola oil and a balance of herbs and spices. Even their homemade tortillas are made without lard-yet none of the flavor is lost. Albert and Blanca are very proud to be one of the first restaurants in Tucson to use Canola oil exclusively in the preparation of each of their foods and tortillas. They are also proud to offer their Corazón Contento (Happy Heart) menu, developed with guidance and supervision of skilled professionals to provide heart-healthy meals for Mexican food lovers. This special menu is just one example of the Vasquez family's goal of making their restaurant the Healthy Mexican Food alternative™.
Albert and Blanca are committed to their children, Jacqueline, Albert Jr., and Emilio, and to their community. They are also generous contributors to youth activities including Sunnyside Schools foundation and ongoing support for the University of Arizona athletics and other youth athletic teams and schools.
